CHILLER INSTALLATION SOLUTIONS
Gowan Mechanical Services' ability to coordinate its efforts with those of subcontractors and manufacturers played a key role in helping the company successfully replace three 1,200-ton and two 800- ton chillers with new, more energy-efficient versions.
There were a number of challenges. The operation had to be completed without disrupting the facility’s day-to-day operations. This required demolishing and replacing the chillers one at a time. Gowan Mechanical Services also had to work closely with the manufacturer to fit the new units into the location’s size and weight limitations. And since the HVAC units were on the 31st floor of a 32-story building, Gowan Mechanical Services and the crane subcontractor had to carefully plan and schedule use of an 850-ton hydraulic crane, the largest ever erected in downtown Houston. In spite of the challenges, however, Gowan Mechanical Services completed the lifting operation on time and within budget over two weekends. The operation satisfied the client’s strict safety regulations and did not disrupt the building’s normal activities. Perhaps best of all, the building’s power demands were cut by 800-kilovolt amperes, reducing electrical consumption by approximately 3.1-million kilowatt hours and enabling a four-year project payback.
El Paso Corporation owns North America’s largest interstate natural gas pipeline system—approximately 42,000 miles—transporting more than a quarter of the natural gas consumed in the country each day.
